TOEFL Tuesday: Official TOEFL Practice Tests

Announcement! As of August 1, 2019, the TOEFL Reading, Listening and Speaking sections will be shortened. The TOEFL will also make changes to its prep materials and scoring system. Because of this, some of the info in our blog posts may not yet reflect the new exam format. We cover all the changes here.

It’s hard to find official TOEFL practice tests. At least, there are no free, full-length tests made by ETS.

But there are some sources for full length tests that are cheap, and there are some free, official materials that can be combined to approximate a full-length test. They’re all explained in this blog post about free full-length TOEFL practice tests.

Practice for your TOEFL exam with Clemmonsdogpark.

But I’ll summarize it all here, too.

Free, official TOEFL material, not full-length:

  • The TOEFL iBT Interactive Sampler: Almost a full test in software similar to a real TOEFL
  • TOEFL iBT Test Questions: Few reading questions, but full speaking and writing tests in paper-only form. There are no recordings for listening, only scripts
  • Quick Prep: Four PDFs almost the same as “TOEFL iBT Test Questions,” but two of them have audio recordings

If you want a free, full-length test, it’s possible to make one by combining pieces of the material above.

Full-length Official TOEFLs, not free:

  • The Official Guide to the TOEFL: The best deal for the price, with three full practice tests on CD
  • Official TOEFL iBT Tests with Audio: Five more official tests, even more similar to the current TOEFL than those in the official guide, but with no computer software—these are paper and audio-CD tests, similar to the Quick Prep tests that have audio
  • TPO (TOEFL Practice Online) tests: Full, exact copies of real TOEFLs with the real software, but they’re $45 each and can only be used one time. Here’s our review of TPO.
