Nursing school have you feeling like this?
There is so much to learn and so much to do that many students wonder how they will ever survive! If this describes you, fear not! There are many things you can do to make your days in nursing school more enjoyable and make you a little less likely to feel like you’ll never make it through.
If you have ever seen the show, Survivor, you’ll know that everyone needs to form an alliance. Nursing school is no different. Form your own alliances. Make friends with your fellow students. This will give you a support system of those who truly understand what you are going through day to day. These are the people who you can commiserate with, celebrate with, laugh with, and cry with. These are the people who you can count on to share notes and participate in study groups. Trust me, you need these people.
But, don’t stop there. Form alliances with your instructors too! Sure, they might not be your friends but building trusting relationships with them can make all the difference in getting through school. Your instructors want to see you succeed and taking the time to reach out can make life just a little easier. Ask questions and participate in class. Stop by office hours when you need some extra help. Talk to them and let them know if you are struggling. You will still have to work really hard but at least you won’t feel like you are all alone.
Invest in the proper materials
I get it. Money is tight, especially when you are a student. But, investing the in the proper material is a surefire nursing school survival tip. Find out what materials you will need and make an effort to buy the right things. Buying that older edition textbook might save you a few bucks now but how much aggravation will it cause you when you are constantly trying to learn new information from an outdated source. If you plan on taking any classes online, make sure your computer equipment is up to date. There is nothing more frustrating for a student than when their computer can’t support the online learning platform required for a course. Check out the system operating requirements of your school’s online classroom and tech support promptly with questions. Saving money now might seem like a good idea but if you are missing out on classroom time dealing with technical issues, you will really wish you’d invested in the right materials. Do yourself the favor now and invest in your education. You won’t regret it.
Keep your sense of humor
Nursing school is serious business. You are investing a lot of time and money into your success and there is nothing funny about that. But, remember to keep your sense of humor. One day you will look back on the time you didn’t know to take a blood pressure and laugh but better yet, try to laugh about it now. Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. Keeping your sense of humor allows you put things in perspective. Yes, nursing is a life or death profession in some ways, but not all the time. Use your sense of humor to relieve your stress and keep your eyes on what’s really important. A positive attitude can go a long way!
Nursing school is hard, no doubt about it. You will be challenged every day. But, keep these survival tips in mind and hopefully you’ll be able to make the days a little bit easier. Good Luck!
