IELTS Study Guide

After deciding to take the IELTS, you will need an IELTS study plan to help you prepare for the test. Here is a guide about why you need an IELTS study plan and how to make an effective plan!

Why is an IELTS study guide important?

Some people may wonder why they have to spend the time to make a plan. In fact, a study plan will save your time while preparing for the test because it arranges your time in advance! It will also help you to clarify your goals, check your improvement and the weaknesses. Therefore, a good study plan is one of the key contributors of getting a high IELTS score!

Are there existing study guides that I can use?

Yes, there absolutely are! Clemmonsdogpark offers two study guides (also known as “study schedules” or “study plans”) that you can use to organize your IELTS preparation:

  • How to Prepare for IELTS in One Month: Academic IELTS Study Schedule
    • This study guide is perfect for students who have about one month left until the IELTS exam. It works best when combined with Clemmonsdogpark IELTS prep online, and can be downloaded or printed.
  • One-Week IELTS Study Plan
    • This study guide is best for students who only have one week left until the IELTS exam. Like the one-month study schedule, it can be downloaded or printed to make studying easier.

If neither of these study guides works for you, then you might consider making your own.

What should I do before making a new IELTS template for my studies?

You need to do some research work before making the template, or plan. First, you need to understand the test format of the IELTS so that you can be familiar with the different test versions, test process and the tasks. Besides, you need to know how is the IELTS score calculated so that you can predict your scores. Check out our The IELTS test format and How the IELTS scores are calculated! Then, find a high-quality product (hey- we might be able to !)

How to make an IELTS study guide?

Set a goal

The first step is to set a goal for yourself. The goal should be based on the minimum requirements of your dream schools. Check the admission websites of those schools and find out their requirements on the overall IELTS score and on different parts!

Find out your weakness

Before making the exact plan, you can do a full length practice test to check your level. Then you can find out your strength and weaknesses in different parts. For example, some students are better at reading and writing while some have better skills in listening and speaking. Even within the same part, you will do better on some types of questions. Check out our IELTS full length practice tests to find out  your weaknesses!

Make daily and weekly practice

This is the most complex step in making an IELTS study plan because an effective study plan should meet your personal needs. Here are some useful tips!

First of all, you need to find your spare time. If you are busy with your study or work, you can study for the IELTS one or two hours each work day. Besides, weekends are the best time for you to prepare for the test.

Then you need to consider how much time you have before your test. A study plan for three months is different from a study plan for one month. If your time is limited, you need to focus more on your weaknesses rather than every parts of the IELTS. For example, if you are already a good listener and reader, you can practice speaking and writing each day and do full length practice tests on weekends.

Here is a sample study plan.

Note: This study plan is only a suggestion. You need to customize your IELTS study plan based on the tips above.

      Hi Celina,

Kuangyan means for you to look over your previously written writing task and edit/revise/fix/study it so that you can see with fresh eyes what you wrote and determine how to improve it. 🙂

A re-evaluation never hurts if all you need is an increase of 0.5. But careful study and a retake has an even greater chance of boosting your IELTS Writing score by half a band. So I’d suggest requesting a rescore and studying for a retake in case the rescore isn’t successful.

Congratulations on such a strong overall score, by the way. It sounds like you have the skill you need to either get a second chance on rescore or get to where you need to be by sitting the IELTS a second time. 🙂
