GRE Scores for Top Universities

Update: This post was updated in May 2019 to reflect ‘s rankings! 🙂

Setting your sights on an Ivy League-level graduate education? Well, if you’re aiming for top universities, GRE scores are going to play a part in your acceptance. So where do you stand when it comes to the best universities?

What are good GRE scores for grad schools?

The GRE score needed will vary across programs, but average GRE scores could potentially range between 145-170 on Verbal and Quantitative, with averages in the 160s for the very top grad programs. The Verbal and Quantitative portions of the GRE have a score range between 130-170, and the average GRE score is around 150 for Verbal and 153 for Quant.

Below I’ve aggregated all of the score charts from all of the individual school posts so that you can see the estimated ranges for average GRE scores by school, and identify where you stand in your application. Scroll down to see them all, or click a school logo to jump directly to the GRE scores for grad schools that you want to see.

Methodology

Using the limited score data in the US News & World Report’s release on graduate schools (for engineering and education), I created a block scale that assumes a standard difference between and the rank block (ie Ranks 1-10, 11-50, 51-100). Next I added the expected difference to the average score of the intended major and spread 2 points on either side of that to create a nice range. It would look like this:

ProgramRankRank blockIntended ScoreExp DifferenceRange
English1#1-101579 points164-168

Of course, you could argue that this isn’t perfect, and I’d have to agree. This is just intended to give you a general idea of what you should be striving for. We suggest ing the admissions office of the graduate programs you are interested in to know exactly what scores they are looking for 🙂

Editor’s Note: This post was originally published in January 2012 and has been updated for freshness, accuracy, and comprehensiveness.

Notes about comments

Due to the overwhelming amount of comments I was getting on this post, I’ve decided to turn them off. While I’d love to give everyone some kind of hard and fast number for your chances (it’s a nerve wracking, opaque experience, I know), I unfortunately can’t. This is because there are numerous factors involved in the admissions decisions and most of those factors aren’t the GRE. The best I can do is tell you below/at/above the score range, but that information you can see for yourself above. My universal recommendation is that you check where you stand compared to the tables above. Then have a look at the forums to see student experiences. Good luck! 🙂
