This week, we’re covering an important concept that often appears in tricky problems on the GMAT: participles! The topic is quite vast, so I’m only covering a small part of it today. If you have more questions about participles, you can check out this blog post, or leave your questions in the comment box below. 🙂

Here’s a still of the board from the video:

Excellent video Kevin.

One question, how is participle different from gerunds, since both modifies noun.

Hi Yash,

Great question! Generally speaking, you can tell the difference between a gerund and a participle by usage. A gerund usually functions as a noun and a participle functions as an adjective. Although they both end in -ing, how they are used is different. The only exception to this rule is when a gerund is used as a complement to complete the meaning of a phrase. Here’s two examples:

What I really like is traveling to other countries.
Seeing is believing.

Noticed that the gerund is a compliment when following a be verb.

So if you are on the look out, you’ll be able to know if the -ing word is a gerund or a participle. I hope that helps. 😀
